Following is an overview of how I make the choices for the softball roster:

This year every player was rated from 1-10 (10 being best) in 6 categories:

  1. Throwing
  2. Groundballs
  3. Fly-balls
  4. Catching
  5. Hitting
  6. Running

The coaches evaluated each player in the above categories. Each category was weighted according to my preferences (i.e. hitting is worth twice as much as groundballs, throwing was worth 1.5x groundballs, etc...) and the scores averaged.

The players were then ranked according to these overall averages.

Overall, this determined the make-up of the team, but exceptions were made. When given a choice between an 8th grader and a similar 6th or 7th grader, then the younger player typically gets chosen, for future considerations. Returning players are also at an advantage, since I have a more complete idea of what their capabilities are than one day of try-outs can provide.

If you are serious about making the team next year, then do as I suggested and play somewhere locally this year. Maybe get lessons. All these things will help you improve as a player and perhaps give you a much better chance next year.
