Summer Reading

Welcome to Trafton's summer reading page. Please see below the Summer Reading for the 2021-2022 school year.

2021-2022 Trafton Required Summer Reading 

 

Required Summer Reading by Grade:    

3rd grade: The Mouse and the Motorcycle, by Beverly Cleary

Students entering the third grade are required to read The Mouse and the Motorcycle, by Beverly Cleary.

  

4th grade: Mr. Popper’s Penguins, by Richard and Florence Atwater

Students entering the fourth grade are required to read Mr. Popper’s Penguins, by Richard and Florence Atwater. 

 

5th grade: Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Spear

Students entering the fifth grade are required to read Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Spear this summer.

 

For Students in Grades 3-5, there will be a writing assignment when school begins, and each student will take the AR (Accelerated Reader) test on the book.

 

6th Grade: Because of Mr. Terput by Rob Buyea AND City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau

Students need to be ready to discuss both novels at the start of school.  It will be important for them to understand the characters, setting, and plot of both novels. In addition, there will be a writing assignment on the book when school begins.

  

7th grade: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain AND Appointment With Death by Agatha Christie

Students entering the 7th grade are required to read Appointmnet With Death by Agatha Christie and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (any unabridged edition), by Mark Twain, this summer.

It will be important for them to understand the characters, setting, and plot of both novels. 7th grade required questions below, click the link to print and answer before the start of school:

8th grade: Shane, by Jack Schaefer AND Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

Students entering the eighth grade are required to read Shane by Jack Schaefer and Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

HISD Library Network Recommended Reading Lists By Grade Levels - This is a link to a website that has Grade-Level lists to print for books that have been compiled by librarians at member schools of the Houston Area Independent School Library Network (HAISLN).  It includes both fiction and nonfiction books by some of the best authors for children and young adults.
